How delightful to be a curiosity. What are the vampires you have heard of like? To explain the strangeness, I will need to know if you are familiar with the concept of ghouls.
Mostly the types that come out of their graves at night to terrorize the nearby populace. Villagers and the like, you know? Break into their homes to drink their blood, or slaughter their cattle. Some people say they're made through suicide.
Some of it. We're not actually great fans of beef. And the Miracle of Unlife takes two, so suicide is right off the table as a cause. Though I admit the concept of attaining immortality by accident while trying to end your existence is appealingly ironic.
Ghouls are mortals who are regularly fed vampire blood, and obtain certain abilities as a result. Resilience, strength, delayed ageing and the like. The only record I have of vampirism without death is of one of their number becoming one of ours, spontaneously.
