Hi! So, Zell gave me your username and Angel also asked that I check in with you too.
[Hopefully that's not too awkward or anything. He's really just trying to touch base with everyone, promise!]
I'm Sora and Mr. Solomons asked me to be the supply runner for everyone down exploring the entrance area! So if there's anything you need you can let me know and I can get it for you!
[Hearing Beckett's voice puts the pieces together and Sora is definitely wincing a bit.]
I know that some pretty bad stuff has been going on but that doesn't mean I won't help you if you need it. I can always leave stuff in one of the buildings and you can pick it up there? Or something like that!
Then you're a fool. [Beckett snaps that instinctively. Not scared. Children always think they're immortal.
He sighs.] But possibly a practical fool. Leaving supplies in nearby buildings would be a good option. It would also allow me to know more precisely where you are and avoid you. Since I don't suppose there's any use in trying to tell you I'd rather not have your services.
[Sora's frowning a bit and it's audible in his voice.]
I'm not a fool. We're all stuck here, we all need help. I don't care what's been going on. And I'm not scared because I've dealt with worse than all of this.
[A slight lie because this place has been wearing on him but...shh.]
Nope. No point. Because I'd just find a way to do it anyway! Is there anything in particular you're looking for right now?
No you haven't. [Beckett's voice is dry. He hasn't dealt with worse than this himself - though there are other circumstances, with him - and this boy can't be more than sixteen, for pity's sake. He doesn't appreciate bravado.] You'll figure that out eventually. Hopefully while all your parts are still attached.
[It's not exactly the nicest way to talk to someone so determined to help him, but if Sora means to hold that up he's going to have to learn to deal with it. Or be scared off. Which would be fine.]
There's nothing I need in particular, unless you're one of the blessed few who has painkilkers on hand. If you really want to be a help... you've spoken to Angel. What about Brian? Jade?
So you're worse than a guy that can time travel and put parts of his soul into thirteen different people in order to survive through time so he can destroy all the worlds and let everything be consumed by darkness? [Sora's just going to match that dry tone with one of his own, thank you very much. He has very little to be scared of, Mr. Becket.
...Most of the time.]
I don't. All I have is vitamins and Antacid. And I spoke to Brian! He..said they didn't need anything and I told him to let me know if that changes. I didn't talk to Jade, though.
[All right, that is impressive. Beckett lets a moment of silence convey as much.]
I meant Norfinbury at large, not me as a threat. But - destroy all the worlds? [That hits his particular point of stubborn, unhappy interest. He sounds rather more invested than in the question of supplies.]
It's better if you speak to Jade. Brian can be a little difficult. She would understand more... human needs.
Norfinbury couls be a lot worse but..it's definitely not the best world I've ever been to. And yeah, Master Xehanort wants to take control of something called Kingdom Hearts that is the source of everything in all the worlds. My friends and I travel between the different worlds to try and stop him and keep the hearts of the worlds from being consumed by darkness.
[This sunshine child deals with a lot of weird stuff.]
I don't. I can't summon my keyblade here or use my magic. The best evidence I have is that I know people from different worlds that don't know me because I've met different versions of them? Like Cl...like Tifa, for one.
[He's not going to talk about Cloud. It's just easier that way.]
You don't have to believe me about any of that, though. I want to help, if I can. That's what I do back home and that's what I want to do here--help people. So if there's anything you need, we can decide on a building and I can use it as a drop point.
[He catches the beginning of that name - recognises it - but that isn't his concern right now. His concern is, in fact, zeroing in with increasingly urgent precision. The more Sora talks, the more focused his interest, and it's starting to frighten him.]
I need to know more, if you want to help. If you're willing to deal in information. You say you've met another version of Tifa - how different? Have you met other versions of you?
Deal in information? Just stuff about me or do you mean information in general?
[Because he doesn't mind talking about himself but he really doesn't want to give up stuff on other people.]
Um..she wasn't extremely different. She was pretty scary--the one I knew. She was really strong and was looking for Cl-loud. She was pretty new to Radiant Garden.
[A pause.]
Not...exactly? I mean, I have a Nobody but I don't know if that really counts.
Only about things that pertain to this concept of "worlds". I'm not interested in personal matters, though if they're relevant... I'll trade. Whatever the terms.
[It's the best he can offer. His eagerness comes through in his voice - eagerness and a subtle anxiety.]
Can you explain what a "Nobody" is? And is Tifa aware that you've met her parallel, is this something I can talk to her about?
[Sora's not object to sharing information about his world; it wouldn't be the first time he's done it.]
Nobodies are the result of someone with a very strong will losing their heart to darkness. Their heart becomes something called a Heartless--and I know that doesn't make sense but it's what they're called--and the body and mind become a Nobody.
[Hopefully that isn't too confusing..]
She is. We didn't talk a whole lot about it but she knows about it.
Thank you. [And now that anxiety is fully audible in the breathed-out words. It takes Beckett a moment to gather himself again after.]
So your having a Nobody, despite you still being here talking to me, means that somewhere out there was a you who lost his heart - am I correct? But you did not meet that other, only the Nobody that became of him. And this is something that can happen in any world, in your experience? I've met a vast array of supernatural strangeness in my nights, but never anything of this sort.
Well it's..me meeting my Nobody shouldn't have been possible, especially not back home. But we existed at the same time because my heart was protecting someone else's heart as well. Someone named Ventus. Roxas kind of looks more like him than he does me, if I'm going to be honest.
[Sorry Beckett. This isn't going to get any easier to understand.]
So Roxas was one part me and one part Ventus when I got turned into a Heartless. And then when I was returned to normal, Roxas was able to linger behind because he wasn't just me...if that makes sense.
It does, yes. The merging of essences naturally generates a third, independent essence. I've seen similar things. [True for so many things, that. He has a frame of reference, a way to understand almost any strangeness that the other worlds have thrown Y
You're one of those types for whom things that "shouldn't be possible" happen on a regular basis, aren't you.
[Sora's going to take that as a good sign all the same.]
Yeah...that's how things back home were. It seemed pretty cut and paste but then it turned out that the entire fight we were involved in was actually a war that had been going on for a really long time.
And so you've become responsible, in some part, for the fate of all existence - as you know it, at least. You'll pardon me if I still have some trouble taking that part at your word.
[A little sardonic, but not openly hostile. There is the faintest promise of answers in what Sora tells him, and he is - disastrously, he thinks - still drawn to that.]
No, it's alright. It's not exactly something that most people would believe. And a lot of people back home don't even really know what's going on.
[Like his mom. His friends back home. Hell, even people that knew about it all forgot for awhile.]
I'm not really sure. I wasn't a chosen keyblade wielder. The honor wasn't passed down to me by any former wielder. It was suppose to be Riku but..the darkness got him first. And I knew I had to save him and Kairi. I think that's what made the keyblade pick me in the end.
No - I can't imagine trying to tell them. All normal humans, I assume?
[Not to disparage normal humans - okay, maybe a little.]
So you were chosen. For your courageous altruism, of course, despite apparently not having other qualifications... I don't know what's more bizarre, that these kind of thing happens so often, or that against all reason they tend to work out.
[It's a struggle, that's for sure. And then of course there's the whole "Everyone forgot who he was for a good chunk of time" thing which made it even more difficult.]
I..guess. I've never really thought about it like that. I just knew I needed to save my friends and the keyblade was there, I think. I'm not really sure how to explain it.
